Worldwide 347 million people are affected by diabetes according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In 2012, 1.5 million deaths were directly associated to diabetes and by 2030 it is predicted to become the 7th leading cause of death in the world. In Sri Lanka, nearly four million have been diagnosed with diabetes and the prevalence has increased by 4% between 2009 and 2014. The Diabetes Association of Sri Lanka (DASL) has informed that diabetes prevalence among Sri Lankans over 20 years in the urban population and the rural population was 16 per cent and 8 per cent respectively and under the age of 20 it was 8.2 per cent.
