Establishing an In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest (IHCA) Registry in Sri Lanka

The College of Anaesthesiologists and Intensivists of Sri Lanka, through its Resuscitation Council, is leading a pilot project to establish an IHCA registry across six hospitals in Sri Lanka. The project will collect and analyze data on in-hospital cardiac arrests to support clinical decision-making and hospital resuscitation practices.

IHCA is very common and carries a high mortality and morbidity. Currently, in Sri Lanka there is lack of data and databases related to both out-of-hospital-cardiac arrest (OHCA) and IHCA. Therefore, establishing the IHCA registry will enable hospitals to systematically collect and analyze data, advance resuscitation medicine, support evidence-based practices, and enhance patient outcomes across healthcare facilities, even in resource-constrained settings.

RemediumOne and the University of Kelaniya are collaborating to provide technical and operational support in clinical data management maintain the database, capture and analyse data related to IHCA. The data collected will be entered into REDcap database platform, designed and established by the Health Data Services Unit (HDSU) of the University of Kelaniya.

The registry will:
a. Evaluate resuscitation outcomes across hospitals
b. Identify factors influencing survival rates
c. Support hospital-based resuscitation protocols and policy development

The findings will contribute to hospital-based emergency response systems and future initiatives in this area.

The registry was established on 1st January 2025 as a pilot project over six-months, at:

  1. Teaching Hospital Ragama
  2. Teaching Hospital Peradeniya
  3. District General Hospital Horana
  4. Hemas Hospital Wattala
  5. Asiri Surgical & Medical Hospitals (private limited), Colombo
