Human trials expected for HIV vaccine

In 2009, UNAID estimated approximately 3000 Sri Lankans were affected with HIV. However, in 2011 there was a decline in the number of reported cases, 1463 HIV cases island wide, of which 253 deceased. 60% of the affected cases are males and more than 50% reside in Colombo.]

According to preclinical trial on animal models, the vaccine has provided protection against a dozen strains of the HIV virus. The vaccine target the vulnerable site of the virus initiating antibody production. Hence, the positive outcome from preclinical trials, have push forth the implementation of the vaccine in human trials which is expected to commence in the near future.
