Irritable bowel disease
IBD has been regarded as a disease primarily occurring in Western populations, however, as indicated, the incident rate is increasing in the Asian region including Sri Lanka. This rise maybe attributed to the development and prosperity leading to improved hygiene and variation in dietary habits. The occurrence of IBD may be due to changes in economic development, improved hygiene and other lifestyle changes. In Sri Lanka, the crude overall annual incidence was found to be 1.37 per 100,000 in Asia followed by the prevalence of UC and CD as 5.3 and 1.2 per 100,000, respectively, according to recent studies.
